Tax exemption of Medicines

Medicines is one of the basic needs of the Filipino people now a days. As we all know that medicines and medical equipment are too expensive and that is one reason why Filipinos are reluctant to seek medical check up and treatment because can't afford to pay hospital bills and medications ordered by their attending physicians. There are times that if they enter the hospital for treatment but they get more sick due to the huge hospital expenses. One of our senator is trying to impose a bill like tax exemption from importation of raw materials of all local medicines in the coverage of value added tax and other importation fees to lower down the retail price of each medicines in the drugstores.
Tariffs and value added tax on medicines and medical equipments are highly regressive and that is one problem of the Filipino people especially the poor.
Removing the tariffs and Value Added Tax that keep us essential medicines and medical equipments out of the hands of the poorest of the poor should therefore a priority of the government.
